He climbed, rung after rung, down into the depths of the cavern. The light from his helmet struck various protuberances and glistened on limestone particles. It must be getting darker and darker but he couldn't tell. There must be an aim to this descent but he couldn't remember it. Water dripped onto his sleeve.
HE SAID INTO HIS HELMET mike, adjusting the case to lower and simlutaneously flicking a cave scorpion from his cheek. An old hand now brushed his foot, and scuttled away down a crevice, leaving a glowing trail. Where are the others, he thought. He had been hoping to impress Rosemary with his dangling, but the growing pain of the scorpion sting in his knee distracting him, and Jason concentrated on reaching the bottom safely.
